    "body": "Southern Pacific reached Goleta in 1887 but stalled at Ellwood for thirteen years. When the Coast Route was finally closed in the last week of 1900, the railroad needed depots, and Goleta got a \"Combination Station 22\" — passenger terminal, freight house, telegraph office and the stationmaster's home in one building, painted Espee yellow with brown trim. The Kellogg family deeded about 8 acres for it in February 1901, on the condition a working station be built and maintained there."

    "title": "The social hub of a farm town",
    "body": "For decades the depot was where Goleta met the world. Farmers gathered on summer evenings; cattle arrived for the packing plant on Fairview and were driven down Kellogg and Hollister while kids watched from the trees. During World War II every bolt of the Marine base came through here — so much materiel that a dedicated siding was built, still used by a lumber yard today."

    "body": "Southern Pacific boarded the building up in 1973 and it spent the rest of the decade being looted and burned. Every other depot on the coast route — Carpinteria, Naples, Gaviota, Surf, Guadalupe — was demolished. Goleta's survived only because the Kellogg family and Southern Pacific were locked in litigation over the land, so nothing could legally be done with it. That accident of paperwork made it the oldest surviving station in the county."

    "body": "The Barnsdall-Rio Grande station was built in 1929 by oilmen flush with Ellwood money, in award-winning Spanish Colonial Revival style. Rerouting the highway cut it off from traffic and it closed to the public by the early 1950s — then sat, admired and empty, for seventy years. A 2015 Goleta History petition gathered nearly 3,000 signatures; a deal to donate it to the City collapsed over fine print in the title. The current plan restores the building inside and out to modern seismic code, puts a historic exhibit inside, and adds a small public coffee shop next door with covered seating."

    "body": "A 1967 plaque placed by the Native Sons of the Golden West marks the only wartime shelling of the US mainland. On 23 February 1942 the Japanese submarine I-17 surfaced offshore and fired seventeen shells at the Ellwood oil installations. Total damage: $500. Total effect on the national mood: enormous."

    "body": "In 1965 the Goleta Sanitary District built a 500-foot temporary pier 200 feet west of the existing one, so a crane could dig a trench for a 36-inch outfall pipe carrying treated wastewater a mile offshore. The pipe came in 40-foot, 15-ton lengths, welded on the sand into 280-foot sections and pulled out by barge. For a while Goleta Beach genuinely had two piers."

    "body": "Goleta Beach sits on a sand spit at the mouth of the slough, and it has been the subject of decades of argument about erosion, revetments and managed retreat. Over one fourteen-year stretch the shoreline gave up an average of twenty feet a year. Three camps have fought over the answer ever since: hold the line with hard structures, let the park retreat, or keep trucking sand back in. The shape of the beach you walk on this year is not the shape your parents walked on."

    "body": "In the early 1960s a teenager called Mike Haskell lived with his parents up on Farren Road, and the old oil-company gate at the bottom of Tecolote Canyon was practically his front yard. He had a key. Nobody got down to the waves without him, so his friends called it Haskell's beach, and the name outlasted the key, the gate and the oil company."

    "body": "The first known name here is the Chumash Hel'apunitse — also their word for the shovelnose guitarfish, of which there were evidently plenty. Several village sites stood around the mouth of Tecolote Creek; in the late 1800s they were dug over and sold off to collectors, damaging them past the point where later archaeologists could read them properly. Fresh water, flat land and a rich shoreline made this one of the most attractive spots on the coast for a very long time."

    "body": "The Sturges family ran cattle here and built the first pier in the 1880s to ship lumber. The Southern Pacific cut through the canyon in 1901. When oil was found off Ellwood in the late 1920s the beach became an industrial zone: two piers at the creek mouth, a third to the west where today's stub still stands, plus tanks, pipelines and roads. Pier removal in the early 1970s left sharp pilings buried in the sand for years. Alvin Dworman bought the land in 1968 and spent three decades and $220 million getting a resort built; the Bacara opened in October 2000 and renamed the beach after itself. Locals never stopped calling it Haskell's, and the resort eventually put up a sign agreeing with them."

His name is now attached to a beach, a canyon, an oil field, a school and a road."

A shell hit the Ellwood pier; a derrick and a pump house were destroyed. The shells were built for ship-to-ship fighting and did little on land, but it was the only wartime shelling of the American mainland, and the effect on the national mood was enormous."

    "body": "Natural seeps have been leaking around the point for something like 500,000 years, releasing roughly 7,000 gallons of oil a day. A 1999 UCSB study found they put out about twice the hydrocarbon air pollution of every motor vehicle in Santa Barbara County combined. The slick weathers into the tar that washes up on beaches for miles in both directions. The Chumash used it — sealing water baskets, waterproofing tomol plank canoes, decorating tools."

    "body": "Helena Devereux began teaching children with disabilities in her own Philadelphia home in 1912, on the conviction that any child could learn in the right setting. By 1945 she had twenty schools in the eastern states and was looking for a western campus. Her foundation bought the whole 500-acre Campbell Ranch for $100,000 — a fifth of what the main house alone had cost to build — and within days it was a school. Coal Oil Point became Devereux Point, and the beach below it became Devereux."

    "body": "Colonel Colin Campbell and Nancy Leiter, a Chicago real-estate heiress, bought the point in the early 1920s and had the architect Mary Craig build a 20,000 square foot adobe on the knoll. Campbell died of a heart attack on a train in 1924, three years in; his will asked to be buried on the ranch, and the ten-foot Scottish granite Celtic cross over his grave still stands at the tip of the point. The cypress row planted by the Cavalletto brothers in 1913 still divides Devereux from Isla Vista."

    "body": "In 1925 the Ilharreguy family paid $100 in gold for 157 acres of windswept bluff and platted a subdivision with a gimmick: the beachfront was cut into 25-foot lots meant to be drilled for oil, with every lot owner sharing in a strike anywhere on the property. The oil never came. Decades later those narrow oil lots were bought up in groups and built on — which is how apartment blocks came to stand a few metres from a cliff that keeps eroding."

    "body": "The Chumash called it Sismikiw. In 1782 the Spanish pilot Juan Pantoja mapped it as Punta de Pantoja — the only time anyone ever did. An 1855 property map calls it Point Salinas, for the salt marsh behind it; the 1870 US Coastal Survey calls it Pelican Point; the county's official 1888 map says Goleta Point. Locals meanwhile called it Fish Rocks, for the fishermen on the rocks. Students in the 1950s made it College Point, and only later Campus Point. A 1927 USGS benchmark is still set on the point, and it still reads Pelican Point — so, federally speaking, that is where you are standing."

    "title": "A rifle range, then a university",
    "body": "The federal government took the point over during the Second World War for a Marine base — the road out to the skeet range was called Skeet Range Road, and fragments of clay pigeon still turn up in the dirt. The Marines left after the war and Santa Barbara College moved onto the base in 1954. In 1955 the university discovered Richfield Oil was about to drill on the brand-new campus: Thomas Bishop had never sold the mineral rights. The rig went up behind a green tarpaulin skirt with scarlet trim, and stayed until 1960."

    "body": "The break inside the cove is called Poles, after the poles marking the 1956 seawater intake that fed the marine laboratory and kept the campus lagoon full. The intakes kept clogging with sand and were replaced by wells in 1965. The poles went; the name did not."

    "body": "T. Wallace More finished a 900-foot, 35-foot-wide wharf with a two-storey warehouse on the end just east of the slough mouth in the summer of 1874, and it made Goleta a port of call with the same shipping rates as Stearns Wharf. Farmers hauled lima beans, walnuts, honey, barley and livestock down More Ranch Road; over the years more than 32,000 tons of asphalt from the More mine went out over it, some of it paving the first streets of San Francisco. A storm wrecked most of it in 1889, the railway took the rest of the business, and winter storms eventually erased it. You can walk to roughly where it stood; nobody can tell you exactly."

    "title": "Still private, still for sale",
    "body": "Most people assume More Mesa is protected open space. It is not: the majority of the land is privately owned, has been listed for sale, and keeps attracting developer interest. The More Mesa Preservation Coalition has spent more than twenty-five years defending the bluff-top grassland, oak woodland and wetland, and is now campaigning to buy it outright."

    "body": "Trails cross the mesa from the neighbourhood edges and drop to the sand; there is no car park at the beach itself. It is one of the least developed beaches on the South Coast, which is exactly why people defend it — and it is long known locally as the county’s clothing-optional beach."

Where Hollister Avenue now runs was underwater; the water reached almost to the modern freeway."

Goleta has been the Good Land ever since."

    "body": "In 1928 two local aviators, Royce Stetson and Gordon Sackett, landed in the corner of the slough behind the original St. Raphael's church at Hollister and Fairview. With Ray Romero they leased dairy land from W.C. Oakley and Albert Bonetti, scraped the willows off with a car-drawn scraper, then got a county road grader to cut a 3,000-foot strip. They called it Santa Barbara-Goleta Airways. That lease landed just before the Ellwood oil strike made the same marshland suddenly valuable — without it, Goleta's airport might have been an oil field."

    "body": "The two big hangars visible in a 1931 air show photograph are still in the exact same spot and were in continuous use until recently. The land he wanted — Tecolotito Canyon — belonged to Nicholas Den's Dos Pueblos Ranch. When Den died suddenly in 1862 and drought destroyed the hide-and-tallow trade, Hollister offered $10 an acre for 5,100 acres. The going rate was ten cents. He skipped probate court approval, which caused decades of litigation."

    "body": "The County christened this the Fowler Road Extension in 1996, when the plan ran Fowler Road east from Fairview to a signal at Highway 217. In 2016 the Santa Barbara Airport declined the western half because it sat inside the Airport Protection Zone, and the scope shrank to a link between S. Kellogg Avenue and Technology Drive. The funding paperwork still says Fowler Road; the street signs will say S. Kellogg Avenue."
